HALO Summer Season 2003 - Divisionals - July 19, 2003
An unexpectedly large number of teams (29!) turned out for the second HALO Divisional of the 2003 Summer Season. Wait times between games were initially a bit long, but those who didn't want to spectate for all the matches were able to enjoy a picnic-like atmosphere outside the Boulevard Brew, where the tournament took place.
Before the official start of the tournament, players participated in a number of impromptu games of Slayer. The entertainment (and frag) factor was high as many did not want to stop playing to begin the tournament. Nonetheless, after a brief overview of the rules, the competition was on.
Pool Play
Each team first had the opportunity to play at least three other teams in pool play before cuts were made and 15 teams moved into single elimination brackets. In pool play, teams had the option of choosing either King of the Hill on Battle Creek or Capture the Flag on Wizard. Most choose the extended grenade fest that is KotH, but there were a number of brutal, nasty and short games of CTF lasting only a few minutes.
As is usual in pool play, there were some wildly uneven matches but also a number of close matches, with winners decided by seconds or a last minute kill. Many of the teams that would advance to the later rounds saw early losses, as they warmed up and sized up their competitors.
Single Elimination Rounds
The top 15 teams advanced out of pool play. After several hours of KotH and CTF, players were excited to show their skills on the pure fragfest that is Team Slayer on the maze-like Chill Out map, which was the first game in the best of three matches. The second game was KotH on Battle Creek, and there was only one match that needed to be decided by the tie-breaking third game of CTF on Wizard. In the end, PsychoGuys won, but not without Party Boys making a strong come-from-behind effort on KotH, as they adjusted to PsychoGuys tactics.
